Teacher appreciation: HYPATHIA OF ALEXANDRIA (Alexandria, Egypt, AD 375 - AD 415). Neoplatonist philosopher, the daughter of Theon, an astronomer and mathematician of Alexandria. Her learning, wisdom, beauty, and high character made her the most influential teacher in Alexandria, her philosophy being an attempt to combine Neoplatonism with Aristotelianism. Associated by many Christians with paganism, she was murdered by a fanatical mob at Alexandria.
